Terps Make NCAA Tournament

It's just been announced that the Terps have made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. They will face Fordham in the first round. I'll let you know what the coverage from WMUC will be, but we're anticipating covering the first round because they are at Taylor Stadium.

Congratulations to the team and Coach Watten!

Maryland goes 1 for 3 against Florida State

The Terrapins entered last weekend trying to get their first ACC win on the season against the #19/#16 Florida State Seminoles. The Terrapins finally got their first ACC win, but it took until Sunday to finally get it.

On Saturday, the Terrapins hosted a doubleheader, and lost both games, 2-0 in the first game, and 3-2 in eight innings in the second game.

On Sunday, the Terrapins finally got their first ACC win of the season, upsetting the Seminoles, 6-2. Hickey and Knight combined for a strong 7 innings, striking out four, and allowing only four hits in the game in their combined effort.

Post-game audio from Head Coach Laura Watten can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?nydzydqmqmz

Maryland Splits Doubleheader versus Hofstra

In the first game, Maryland lost 2-0 to the Hofstra Pride. Despite a strong pitching performance from Hickey (2ER, 7SO, 7IP), the Terrapin offense went cold, with only 6 hits.

For the second game, Maryland stormed back, winning 10-2 after five innings. The Terrapins started out fast with a six-run first inning, including a three-run hometun from Pitcher Kendra Knight. The game was called after five innings due to the slaughter rule after Lexi Carroll's RBI double to right-center field. The full recap for both games can be found here on umterps.com

Spring Break Trip proves successful for Terps

Sorry for the slight delay in posting (I'm on vacation), but the Terps have had a very nice week in Florida. On Wednesday, Kendra Knight threw a no-hitter against Columbia and the Terps also beat Akron 9-1. Then, on Friday, the Terps upset #18 Oklahoma State behind 12 k's from Kerry Hickey.

They have 3 more games this weekend, but so far, Coach Watten must be very pleased with her team's performance. Be sure to check out the Coach's show on Monday at 3 p.m. and after break, we'll be back to broadcasting the games.

Maryland defeats Mount St. Mary's, 4-2

In the last game of the Maryland Round Robin, the Maryland Terrapins came away with a 4-2 victory over the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers. The full recap can be found here from umterps.com.

The Terrapins won thanks to Kerry Hickey's strong performance on the mound, going 6.0 innings, striking out 9 and allowing only 6 people on base.

Vangie Galindo also helped the Terps' effort with two hits for all four of the Terps' runs, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Mount St. Mary's made a comeback in the top of the 7th inning, however, getting 2 earned runs against Lexi Carroll. But Kendra Knight came into the game and shut the Mountaineers down with the final strikeout for the save.

With the win, the Terrapins went 4-1 in the tournament, and will face Howard in a doubleheader Wednesday.

Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic

The Terps traveled down to Boca Raton, Fl. to begin their season in the FAU Kick-Off Classic. Their first game of a double-header on Friday was against Kentucky; they lost 1-0. Here are links to the box score and recap. The second game was a 2-1 win for the Terps against host FAU. Here's the box score for that game. On Saturday, the Terps again split a double-header. They beat Pittsburgh in the first game 4-3, then fell to Mississippi 2-0 in the second game. Here is the recap of both games from UMterps.com.

On Sunday, they again matched up with Ole Miss. They lost 2-1; here is the box score and recap. Another close game where the offense didn't produce much but the pitching was great. More specifically, Kerry Hickey and Kendra Knight were great. All weekend. Both were in mid-season form and create a nice one-two punch for the Terps on the mound. The Terps travel down to Columbus, Ga. for the NFCA Leadoff Classic this upcoming weekend. Their first game is a tough matchup against #9 Alabama. WMUC Sports won't be able to broadcast these games, but look for a recap and some coverage.
