Terrapins Sweep Eagles in Weekend Series

The Maryland Terrapins (27-12, 5-3 ACC) swept the Boston College Eagles (10-22, 5-6 ACC) in a three game series in College Park this weekend. Maryland softball now claims third place in the ACC standings, behind Georgia Tech and North Carolina, respectively.

Game one featured Maryland ace Kerry Hickey against Boston College freshman Amanda Horowitz. Eagles' left fielder Tory Speer hit an RBI double to drive in Nicole D'Argento and Ali Lynette-Krech in the third. Hickey was able to limit the damage and escape without further trouble.

In the bottom half of the inning, Maryland loaded the bases with 0 outs and brought in one run on an error by Eagles catcher Brittany Wilkins. The game remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when D'Argento plated Lizzy Ploen on a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a two run lead.

Maryland was able to score three in the bottom of the half of the inning courtesy of an error by third baseman Lizzy Ploen and a walk off triple by Bree Hanafin.

The Terps won the second game of the series 1-0 thanks to a sixth inning RBI by Sara Acosta and good pitching by Kendra Knight and Ashley Czechner.

The final game on Sunday afternoon went into extra innings and resulted in a 4-3 ten inning Maryland win. After falling behind 1-0, Maryland scored three in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead on an RBI double by Kathy McLaughlin and a two run home run by Sara Acosta.

In the top of the sixth, the Eagles tied the game on a two run home run by Tory Speer. From there, the game went into extras, with Maryland starter Kerry Hickey, who pitched the first six innings, being replaced by Ashley Czechner.

In the bottom of the tenth, Hanafin led off with a double. After advancing to third on a Kendra Knight sacrifice bunt, Hanafin scored two batters later on a game winning sacrifice fly by Candice Beards. It was the second walk off win of the series for Maryland.

For the Eagles, starter Allison Gage could not make it through the third inning. Amanda Horowitz relieved her and pitched four scoreless innings. Morgan Kidd came on to pitch in the seventh and took the loss in the bottom of the 10th.

On a five game winning streak, Maryland will host North Carolina State in a three game series starting on Friday.

April 3rd, 2011- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Maryland Terrapins

On a Sunday afternoon, the Maryland Terrapins were held hitless until the seventh inning in a 2-0 loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech pitcher Lindsey Anderson allowed her first hit to Vangie Galindo on a ball that deflected off of Anderson and remained near the pitcher's mound. The Terps tried to rally and loaded the bases with two outs, but Marisha Branson, pinch hitting for Kathy McLaughlin, hit into a fielder's choice to seal the win for the Yellow Jackets.

Kendra Knight started for the Terrapins and allowed a two-run home run in the top of the second to Yellow Jackets right fielder Jessica Sinclair. It was the only hit that Knight allowed on the day in a complete game performance. Knight finished with 7 innings, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts and the 1 hit allowed to Sinclair.

The game was a pitcher's duel and while Knight pitched a very good game, the one mistake that she made cost her the win against a strong Georgia Tech team.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are now 31-6 with a 6-0 record against ACC opponents. The Maryland Terrapins are 22-12 with a 2-3 ACC record. The Terps continue their 13 game home stand on Wednesday against Georgetown.
